What I Have Learned Over the Course of the Semester

Over the course of the semester, I have learned many things about myself that I feel have really empowered me in my confidence in how far I have come within my range of communication.  For example, the discussion of the discovery and process of creating the “self” was extremely helpful in identifying my communication attachment styles and how they have evolved from when I was a child to being an adult today (I switched from an anxious ambivalent attachment style to a secure attachment style).  Another thing that comforted me was the discussion of relational dialectics.  When we read that chapter, I was going through some stuff in a personal relationship and I was considering ending the relationship due to the recurrent tensions occurring.  This section squelched those fears as I realized that the tensions occurring were natural and will be everlasting.  I have learned more about myself in this class than any other course I have taken in my college career; so much so that I a planning on purchasing the book at the end of the semester as I had only rented it.

  1. I think it is great how this course has empowered you. I also thought the section about attachment styles was interesting. I think it is so important to see how growing up as a child and the attachment styles you form affects your communication as an adult. I think your childhood experiences are so important because they shape the rest of your life. I think this is why it is so important for children to form secure attachments. It is interesting how this class made you think twice about ending your relationship and how you found that tensions in a relationship are normal. It is so great that this class helped you.

  2. Like you, I have learned many things about myself as well while being in this class. I feel like this class has made me a better communicator and listener as well. I also liked the discussion of the discovery and the process creating the “self”. I honestly felt like this section helped me realize what my communication attachment styles were as well. I really enjoyed this class because I was able to grasp so much knowledge that helped me become a better listener and communicator as well. Overall, I thought this class was very helpful and interesting.
